Consulting is truly an apprenticeship business. The bulk of the learning comes from watching more senior colleagues navigate the daily challenges of the job, and learning both explicitly and implicitly from their example and mentorship.
Case Strategy is very unusual relative to any consulting firm serving clients of the caliber we serve: our Managing Director plays a day-to-day role in every engagement. In this way, even more junior team members have the opportunity to learn the subtleties of logical structure, analytic thinking, and tailored communications from a leader in the consulting industry.
Another unique learning opportunity that Case Strategy affords its employees is our "real case" training module. Case Strategy works with a select group of clients who enjoy playing a role in our New Associate training program. This allows Associates to work in a relatively risk-free environment, as the clients anticipate there will be on-the-job learning taking place. At the same time, Associates tackle real client questions on a real project, sharpening their consulting skills by gaining exposure to senior-level clients and getting presentation experience on their first engagement.
It is of course critical to insure that new employees are rapidly able to contribute to solving the client’s questions. An additional formal resource to enable this is a program in which new members of the firm are assigned colleagues. They help new employees adjust to the firm and to the workload.
Colleagues provide a model for new staff to follow in their day-to-day work, as well as a resource for workplace questions and issues. They act as informal advisors on work challenges, such as planning travel or finding that online database you need to locate market share in the pet food industry. Colleagues are equally important in addressing non-work concerns and interests. They can act as a tour guide for those just moving into the area, pointing new employees to local banks, weekend activities, or the best all-night diner in southern New Hampshire. The Colleague Program helps to insure the professionalism of our product, while reflecting the importance of collegiality, teamwork, and continuous learning that are cornerstones of the Case Strategy culture.
